Gaming Your Way

May contain nuts.

Just a load of old balls really

Kongregate seems to have a good buzz about it right now, so I figured it'd be interesting to see if it could be used to help pimp GYW.

I've just uploaded a slightly tweaked version of my old game ( Which was originally done to pimp stimunation ), Crazy Balls.

grabFinal.png

After finding out ( Once it was up there, as always ) that the swf is actually bigger than what they allow, and a quick bit of editing, it's all looking good. Don't think my hi-score stuff is working correctly with their back-end, but I can live with that for the time being, this is just a test the water release.

One thing that's freaked me out is that at the time of writing, about 20 mins after it going live on there, it's had 5 ratings. Call me a cynic, but should you be rating a game you've only played for at most 3 mins ? ( I know this 'cause of the hi-scores so far, no one has even cycled through the levels ). You can if you hate a game on sight ( Or even love it, which is rarer ), but to think a game's average / ok in just a couple of minutes seems a bit, hmmm, rushed ( Wanted to say shit, but that's possibly too harsh ).

Perhaps it's 'cause I'm looking at this as a developer, knowing what goes into making a game ( Whether it's good, bad or indifferent ) rather than as a games player ( Playing on a site with an insane number of free games to play ). It's just that I remember doing a couple of reviews for gotoAndPlay.it and spending ages on the games. I wanted to know them inside and out as much as I could before passing comment on them.

Maybe it is a developer thing, maybe it's cause you get points for everything you do at kongregate ( "Farted ? Here's a point" ), or maybe it's not even worth worring about.

Squize.

I know what you mean.  Rating spam is a problem on Kongregate because they aware points to people to rate games.  Of course... that is also a positive because it encourages people take the time to rate a game.

It is better now that they only award 1 point (used to be 5).

I just played your game which brought me here.  The loved the short music loop... kinda hypnotic.  The 5 minute distraction was perfect although that music loop will probably haunt me for much much longer.

I wouldn't put to much stock in the ratings.  If you look my Asteroids Revenge I and II... I only gained .09 in ratings.  If I just barely break a 3 with AR III  (almost a completely different game) I will be disappointed.

Hey Adam, thanks for the comment mate.

Yeah I'm not really into being a ratings whore. I quite like the game, if other people do then all well and good, if not then I'm not going to lose any sleep.

It just freaked me out that it was being judged so quickly. From memory it took about 2 weeks to do originally, and I spent last Saturday making it kong. friendly and rebranding it. It's not really my definitive work.
But, if I was to post something on there which I thought was the best thing I'd ever done, and spent a lot of time on it, I would be royally gutted if it got rated in exactly the same "throw away" manner. Which I imagine it would.

I guess it's just an eye opener having my stuff rated like that, or even rated at all. It's funny going from picking up a Flash Forward last year, to getting a 2.90 this year :)

Right, I'm off to play some Asteroids revenge...

I just tried dropping you an email with a pre-release link to version 3.  However it bounced back... tried again with the default subject with the same results.

Drop me a note if you want to check it out.  It is orders of magnitude better then AR2... at least worth a 3.2 on Kongregate.  :)
